September 13th is Roald Dahl Day, a day when people of every age can not only celebrate the joy that Roald's books have brought to children (and big kids) all over the world, but also support Roald Dahl's Marvellous Children's Charity, which exists to make ill children's lives better.
The Roald Dahl Day website has some blertwuffable ways of getting involved - take a look at their party pack page, which has downloadable quizzes, posters, and activities, as well as 50 scrumdiddlyumptious ways to celebrate Roald Dahl Day. The Roald Dahl Museum will also be holding a day of story telling and activities on Sunday 15 September from 10am to 5pm.
We've chosen our favourite ten ways of celebrating - will you be doing any of these tomorrow?
- Roald Dahl kept an ideas book, where he wrote down all his best ideas. He thought good ideas were like dreams, too soon forgotten. Why not start your own ideas book?
- Invent 10 swishwiffling new gobblefunk words and share them with your friends. We already made start with blertwuffable.
- Give someone a favourite book- wrapped in newspaper and tied up in string, just like Roald used to do.
- Have an exuberant whizzpop (this one might be better experienced at home).
- Create your own treasure table - a special place to put your weird and wonderful treasures. Roald’s treasure table included a metal hip bone and a silver ball made of sweet wrappers.
- Pretend you are the Grand High Witch and cast a ghaaaaastly spell.
- Tweet your favourite word for Roald Dahl Day (use the hash tag #dahlday to make sure it gets found).
- Change your Facebook status to your favourite Roald Dahl book quote. Here is ours: “A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.”
- Write your own Revolting Rhyme. Be as rude as you like (but don't be mean!)
- Read a Roald Dahl book that you’ve never read before – if you’ve read them all, read your favourite again, curled up with a mug of hot chocolate (or even frobscottle if you are lucky). Now where did we put our copy of The Twits…
