Did you know black cats sadly often take longer to be rehomed from animal rescue shelters than cats with more colourful coats? For Friday the 13th, we have chosen 13 beautiful black rescue cats waiting for new homes - why not let them cast a spell on you?
Visit the websites of these charities if you are interested in adopting any of the cats on this page, and don't forget to read our top tips on adopting a pet from an animal shelter.
From Battersea Dogs and Cats Home: "Poor Ruth was abandoned on the streets in a box with 3 other cats. She is looking for a quiet home with patient owners willing to give her the time and space she needs to adjust, settle and bond. Due to her timid nature, Ruth ideally needs a quiet, adult household but could potentially live with calm teenagers who will allow her to settle in her own time. Ruth will make a loving & gentle companion once settled and she trusts her new family."
From Bath Cats and Dogs Home (RSPCA): "10 year old Jacob has come to us through no fault of his own and is such a sweet boy. He is quite deaf and possibly a little senile with age so we would like to home him in an indoor home so he keeps safe. He loves to spend his time curled up in his bed and then will come out and call to you for attention. He is a laid-back boy, dribbling slightly when enjoying a fuss and cuddle! He would be great in any home, as long as he had some time to himself for his snoozes."
From Cats Protection (Caterham, Redhill & East Surrey Branch): "I'm Badger, aged 5, a chirpy chappie who can live with other cats if they're not too bossy!! My owner loved me very much but sadly had to give me up because she couldn't afford me any more. I'm looking for a home without small children with someone who can promise me it'll be for keeps, because this is the second time in my life I've been homeless. My fosterer says I'm a loving and cuddly sofa cat who likes the easy life, but I enjoy going outside too. I'd like a garden and a safe road please - nobody's asked about me yet so do come soon."
From Mayhew Animal Home: "My name is Geisha and I am 3 months old. I am a very sweet and gentle little girl who is looking for a second chance. I am hoping to find somebody with a big heart who will give me all the love in the world. I am a quiet curious little soul who just want to show you how grateful I am with as many purrs as possible. I have had some ongoing treatment for my eyes which I may need from time to time in the future. I arrived at The Mayhew after I was found alone, scared and frightened on the streets. I have found a new lease of life and would love to carry on developing in the safety of a new home."
From Margaret Green Animal Rescue: "Hello, I’m Amber and I am approx 4 years old. I am a gentle soul who was found as a stray. I am a little timid at first but would love nothing more than a nice quiet home with a comfy bed I can sleep on. I will make a very loving companion and promise to give you as much love and affection as you give me."
From Celia Hammond Animal Trust: Derek is currently being fostered by Sue, here is what she says: "Derek is around ten years old and was badly neglected by his previous owners. By the time he came to Celia Hammond he was filthy, with matted fur as he was unable to wash himself. He had a growth in his mouth, and his teeth and gums were in such a state the vets had to remove most of them along with the growth. After his operation and lots of tlc he is now eating happily and can groom himself properly, so his fur is really healthy and shiny again. Derek is the most loving cat I have ever had. There is nothing more he loves than company - particularly if there is a lap going spare! He will curl up and stay put for hours if you let him. He is a real 'gentleman' with an incredibly sweet and gentle nature. Derek will make someone a very affectionate and loyal companion."
Now this is what we call relaxed sleeping! From RSPCA Alton, Haslemere and Petersfield branch: "Toby is a lovely all black boy of about ten years old, whose owner sadly passed away recently, so he is rather sad at the moment. He loves attention, laps and cuddles and will make a super family pet."
From Cats Protection (Caterham, Redhill & East Surrey Branch): "Hi, I'm Imogen and the vet thinks I'm aged between 3 and 4 years. I'm a darling girl looking for my forever home and the person who took my photos said that I'm one of the friendliest cats they'd ever met, and great with people."
From Ashbourne Animal Welfare: Marmite is a pretty 8 year old female whose owner sadly died.
From Cats Protection (Hendon, Finchley & Mill Hill branch): "Muffin a black male is approximately 4 years old. He was initially homed by us in 2009 but unfortunately his owners were unable to keep him when they moved and he has come back in to us. He's a sweet natured chap although a little on the timid side until he gets to know you but he does like being cuddled. Neutered, vaccinated and microchipped with 4 weeks free insurance when adopted."
From Gables Farm Dogs and Cats Home: "My name is Patrick and I am an adult male. I am a little shy initially but once I get to know you I am a very friendly chap. I am looking for a quiet home where I can build my confidence."
From RSPCA Cornwall: "9 year old Taz is a calm, friendly, smart cat who has a laidback character and is very affectionate. He previously lived with other cats who he got along with just fine. With his easy nature and gentle soul he'll make a smashing addition to a home where any children are age 8 years or above."
From Cats Protection (Epsom, Ewell & District branch): "Truffle is a one year old, fluffy, black, male, cat. He is very friendly and affectionate. Truffle could be homed with children but would be best as the only cat in the home."
