In 2015, the RSPCA received 1,118,495 phone calls to their 24-hour line with people reporting a range of cases of animal cruelty. Throughout the UK they now have over 340 RSPCA inspectors, 50 animal welfare officers and 88 animal collection officers all working to prevent cruelty and promote kindness to animals.
More than 47,000 animals were found new homes in 2015 and there are now 17 regional animal centres aimed at helping people to adopt pets and rehome rescued animals.
If you’ve considered looking for a new pet and would like to help an animal in need the RSPCA have 5 easy steps to get involved with their Find a Pet service:
- Search for your type of pet and region online
- Complete an application form
- Meet one of the adoption support volunteers
- Bring your new family member home
Abigail Moon, the RSPCA’s rehoming manager, said: “Most of our rehomed pets aren’t puppies or kittens. They’re loud, quiet, fluffy, big, small, or even three-legged. They come with a personality ready-made, a past that’s unique to them and a lot of love to give.
All we ask is that you return that love, and treat them with the compassion and respect that each and every one truly deserves. Every animal which we rehome comes with a story. And although each individual may not be perfect, they will be perfect for you."
There are challenges in adopting animals who have suffered but the rewards can be huge – giving a rescued animal a second chance, knowing you’ve helped an animal in distress and offering a safe home to your new pet. There’s also continued support from experts available and you can even share your story and find inspiration from others on twitter #findeachother.
