With the sun finally out, Guide Dogs UK have released useful information to keep your hounds from heat stroke!
It’s hard enough for humans to stay cool in the heat so take a moment to think about your four-legged friend and how you can help them stay cool in extreme temperatures, they are wearing a fur coat after all!
Top tips to prevent your dog from heat stroke:
- Exercise when the weather is cooler and maybe consider shorter walks
- If a surface is too hot for you to touch, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws
- Remove access hair with a haircut or brush
- Always have fresh water available
- Get out a paddling pool or sprinkler to help them keep cool in the garden
- Never leave a dog in the car.
If you start to spot your dog suffering from the following, act quick and get them into the shade, apply towels soaked in water to their body, or hose them down if you’ve got one handy. If they still show heat stroke symptoms, please seek advice from a vet immediately.
Signs of heat stroke include:
- Excessive panting
- Anxious behaviour
- Lack of response to commands
- Rapid heartbeat
- High fever
- Vomiting/diarrhoea
- Collapse
