The most out-of-the-ordinary things that fundraisers have ever done

You might know a lot about your favourite charity, but how well do you know the people that work behind the scenes? Each month we chat with fundraisers from different charities and try to get to know them a bit better. One of our favourite questions to ask is:

What is the most out-of-the-ordinary thing you’ve ever done?

Catherine Miles, fundraising director at Anthony Nolan.

"Getting stuck on a chairlift at 1 a.m., halfway up a mountain in the Arctic Circle, watching the Northern Lights and listening to wolves howling below me."

Graham Kelly, director of fundraising at Beating Bowel Cancer.

"Working as a station hand on a cattle ranch in North-West Australia and living on beef for three months."

Lesley Pinder, innovation and product development manager at Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

"I guess track cycling is quite out of the ordinary, although for me I can’t imagine life without it. I have raced around the country and won a gold medal at the National Masters (over 30) Track Championships. Worlds next year!"

Maren Hallenga, co-founder of Coppafeel!

"My fiancé and I own a tandem bike, which we rode across the Alps from Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean sea. It was a true test of our physical strength - and our relationship!"

Danielle Atkinson, head of public fundraising at Breast Cancer Campaign

"This is where I’d normally make something up to make myself sound exciting! Probably staying on a hotel on stilts on the Amazon river and exploring by boat – which included piranha fishing, swimming with dolphins and walking in the rainforest."

Gareth Vorley, general and online fundraiser for Thai Children's Trust.

"I studied Thai language for my degree, and as part of this I lived in Thailand for a year and attended a Thai university. I also applied to be on Big Brother twice!"

David Steadman, executive director of fundraising and marketing at Action on Hearing Loss

"Working with a small group of other parent volunteers, I helped found a new state school."
