Devastating earthquakes hit Southern Turkey and north-west Syria on the 6th February and again on the 20th February. These earthquakes have resulted in over 44,000 people losing their lives and many more being injured.
How you can help
The Disasters Emergency Committee, DEC, has setup an appeal, that organises with other charities on the ground so you know your donation will be directed to the most needed areas.
DEC charities and their local charity partners were among the first to respond providing support from the beginning of the crisis. Their immediate priorities were search and rescue, medical treatment, securing shelter, heating safe spaces and providing blankets, warm clothes and supplying food and clean water.
Some of the charities the DEC work with include:
- Action Against Hunger
- Action Aid
- Age International
- British Red Cross
- CAFOD
- Islamic Relief
- Save the Children
- Oxfam
And many more…
So you understand exactly how your donation could be used, the DEC have given this helpful outline:
- £10 could provide blankets to keep two people warm.
- £25 could provide emergency food for a family for ten days.
- £50 could provide emergency shelter for two families.
You can donate or visit their website to find out more about the appeal.
