Volunteers treat 800 at Royal Welsh Show

Date Posted: 25 Jul 2013

St John Cymru Wales volunteers are expecting to have treated around 800 people by the close of this year’s Royal Welsh Show, which is on a par with their busiest ever year.

The most common complaints have been bites, stings, blisters and alcohol-related problems, with a few more serious injuries such as heatstroke and broken limbs.

One patient was taken to hospital by air ambulance on Thursday 25 July with chest pains.

St John Wales had 70 volunteers on site every day, providing 24 hour first aid cover at the showground; including five mobile volunteers patrolling the site on foot and six fully-equipped ambulances.

St John Wales also launched its free, bilingual First Aid for Farmers app at the show, aimed at reducing the 40-50 deaths that occur on farms in the UK every year.

The app contains advice on dealing with common farm accidents including severe bleeding, amputations, crush injuries and how to cope in severe weather.

Once downloaded, the app will work in rural areas, even when there is no internet connection available.
