A gift in your Will for Mercy Ships

By remembering Mercy Ships in your will, you will continue to spread hope and healing to some of the poorest countries in the world for generations to come.

A legacy gift for Mercy Ships can help create a bright future for children, young people and adults, long- suffering from treatable conditions, freeing them from their pain, disability or disfigurement and giving them a joyful homecoming, returning to school, work, family and community!

Your legacy gift can save the life of children like Djaliou.

When she brought her five month old son to Mercy Ships, Djaliou's mother, Sara told us, "My son will die without surgery please help him live."  Djaliou received the free surgery needed to remove a tumour mass on his tongue, and today is a happy boy with a long, healthy life ahead of him.

Your gift can help desperate people like Sambany, who had lived for two-thirds of his life of over sixty years with a growing tumour on his face and neck.  He heard about Mercy Ships on the radio and six friends helped carry him for two days to reach the ship.  His 7.46 kg tumour was successfully removed in a long and complicated operation.  After recovery and to the surprise of many he was able to return home to his wife, relieved of the burden he had carried for around forty years.

A legacy of improved health services is left by the hospital ship, Africa Mercy after each port visit, due to training and professional mentoring given by Mercy Ships medical teams.  Your legacy gift can help build capacity in local health services and in sharing knowledge, skills and good practice in hospitals in Africa.

Help us to equip a new hospital-ship to impact more lives.  In 2021 a new 'ship of mercy' will serve alongside Africa Mercy to save and change tens of thousands more lives, and to provide mentoring, training and education for many more local medical and healthcare professionals.

Your legacy gift for Mercy Ships can have a lasting impact for many future generations!

Leave a Legacy of Hope and Mercy

The legacy brochure shows how a legacy gift can make a world of difference for patients desperately in need of surgery to free them from life threatening and life destroying conditions. Hospital ships transform lives, bringing a cargo of mercy with a crew of professional volunteers ready to provide surgery and aftercare which are otherwise not accessible for most people in West Africa; and to mentor and train local medical and healthworkers. Hospitals and clinics are renovated, building capacity in the local health service.

In 2021 a new hospital-ship will come into service, and your legacy of continuing compassion can help Mercy Ships to bring hope for many more patients.

The brochure answers many 'frequently asked questions' about making a will and how we can help you in the process, with information about how you can take advantage of a professional, free will-writing service without any obligation.

Free Will Service

Need help writing your Will?  Mercy Ships offers a Free Wills service

Thanks to a partnering with the National Free Wills Network in 2018 and 2019, Mercy Ships is offering a Free Wills service that can enable you and your partner to make a simple or mirror Will, or to update an existing Will, for free using qualified solicitors within reasonable travelling distance of where you live.

Any additional or specialist work, such as setting up a Trust for a dependant, or passing on a business, would be chargeable, over the basic cost which is free. Mercy Ships pays at a discretionary rate through the Network.

You don’t have to include a gift to Mercy Ships in the Will you write, but we hope you will consider it, after you’ve provided for your loved ones.

What you can do to make use of the Free Wills service

  1. To request a pack with full information about the free wills service email us at: legacy@mercyships.org.uk or phone our Legacy Officer on 01438 727800.
  2. We will arrange for a pack to be sent, and will pass on your details securely to our partner.
  3. The National Free Wills Network will send you a pack with full information, including a voucher for an appointment with a local solicitor.
  4. You can set up a meeting to see your chosen solicitor who will draw up your Will and you don’t have to pay the bill.

For couples who are not married, writing a Will can protect your partner. If you live with a partner you’re not married to, even if you have children together, you cannot inherit anything from the estate, and the partner cannot inherit anything from yours unless you make your wishes known in a Will. If you die without a Will, your estate will go to your blood relatives, and nothing to your partner.

Writing your Will is a good way to protect someone you love.

Why does Mercy Ships provide a Free Wills service?

We offer a Free Wills service to make it easier for you to write or update your Will. Many people who use the service also choose to support us by including a gift in their Will or by making a donation.

Make a Pledge

Gifts left in wills are really important to Mercy Ships. However even if you haven't made a will, making a pledge to do so in the future would really help us to find out about your future intentions.

Pledges are not legally binding so by filling out this form you are not committing yourself! You are simply allowing Mercy Ships to confidently estimate future support for their cause.
